Perth FM News - 8th June '09

Victory for SNP

The SNP are celebrating after success in last night European Election count. They secured the majority of votes in Perth and Kinross. They also took 29% of the vote in Scotland. It's the first time they've secured the largest share. The Conservative party came in second locally, 2000 votes behind. The liberal Democrats took third place with Labour close fourth.

Black Watch in Afghanistan drugs raid

The Black Watch has recently completed another operation in Afghanistan. They've been involved in night raids. They were deployed to Helmand Province at the end of March. One soldier has died during their time there so far. The 3 Scots regiment have close ties with Perth, including headquarters at Balhousie Castle.

Roadshow drives in to Perth

The Driving Ambition roadshow shifts into gear in Perth and Kinross this month. It gives youngsters the chance to learn about responsible and safe Car use. Experts will be on hand to teach school pupils. They'll find out how to pick their driving instructor right up to choosing their first car. The summer event follows a successful pilot last year. They'll be travelling round secondary schools in Perthshire for the next two weeks.
