Gordon Brown backs rival to Perth in City status competition
Prime Minister Gordon Brown came under attack from local politicians yesterday after apparently backing a rival to Perth's city status campaign. Mr Brown made comments to potentially approve a bid for Reading in Berkshire. Civic leaders used the Perth 800 celebrations to launch the bid for the 2012 Queens Diamond Jubilee competition but such a high profile backing from the Prime Minister for another potential rival will be particularly unwelcome. The Prime Minister has been urged to visit Perth to view the strength of the campaign.
Work on new dental centre making progress
Work is progressing on a new 6 million pound dental treatment and teaching centre in Perth. The centre at Broxden will massively ease pressure on dental services for Perth and Kinross providing 20 new chairs in 15 surgeries and supporting an additional 10 000 registrations by its third year of operation. Funding has come from local bodies such as the Scottish Government as the current community dental services and post graduate training are only available in cramped accommodation at Drumhar medial practice in Perth city centre. The new hospital will also provide a state of the art training environment for all levels of dental professionals.
