Community team to build on success

The North Perth Community School Team are working hard to build on a recent Gold at the 2010 COSLA awards. When they won the Community and Citizen Well-being category, they became the first ever group from Perth to win a Gold Award at the event. Now they are looking to use the success as a springboard to attract further funding and develop projects such as "Men and Children Matter", which aims to strengthen the role of the father in a child's life.

Attacker escapes prison

A Perth woman has today escaped prison after pleading guilty to the assault and robbery of a 72 year old man. Heroin addict Tracey Shields, visited the pensioner's home with fellow drug addict Sara Townley, hoping they could borrow money from him. However, the pair were asked to leave and Townley pushed him to the floor before Shields raided his trouser pockets and removed a wallet. Townley was jailed for a year when sentenced earlier in the month but Shields has escaped imprisonment and was instead handed an eight-month restriction of liberty order.

New care home rejected

Councillors have rejected plans for a new care home in rural Perthshire, amid concerns over the suitability of the proposed location. Plans to use a remote cottage in Logiealmond lost out by a single vote, after a debate by the development control committee. The home, which was to be used for children with behavioural and emotional issues, would have bordered a local farm and therefore posed a number of safety risks. Councillor Willie Wilson had urged other councillors to defer the decision until further information was received but this was turned down and the application has now been refused.
