Perth city unscathed as Perthshire hit by adverse weather

Although Perth itself has emerged relatively unscathed by the adverse weather, there were fresh snow falls in some parts of the Local Authority area and strong winds have led to drifting snow and fallen trees. Council staff have been working to carry out gritting and snow-clearing and to remove fallen trees, with priority roads gritted in advance of the weather forecasts. There have been road closures through the morning in areas further north around Pitlochry and Comrie and two primary school closures.

Climate Challenge fund money awarded to Perth communities

Communities across the east of Scotland will be receiving a share of over one and a half million pounds of funding. The final round of the Climate Challenge fund is supporting more Perth and Kinross communities – with the money going towards reducing carbon footprints. St Ninian's Old Parish Church has been awarded 144 thousand pounds to refurbish their church hall. While The Letham Residents Association will be growing their own food in gardens around the area, after receiving 71 thousand pounds. They’ll also be training residents to help, and to decrease waste through composting.

Kirk "Future" project reaches new milestone

Today marked a milestone in St John's Kirk's "Vision for the Future" project, as contracting was announced for the completion stages. based company Laurence McIntosh will be carrying out work in the Kirk nearer the end of the year, which will see the Kirk closed for 6 months from the end of August. The project aims to improve the facilities within the Kirk, making it accessible for arts, culture and heritage events. Fundraising has been carried out for 2.8 million pounds needed, with only 50,000 pounds left to go.

Man appears in court accused of murdering his Uncle

A 26 year old man has appeared in private at Perth Sherrif Court charged with murdering his uncle. Darren Williamson is alleged to have hit James Williamson repeatedly on the head with a hammer, before setting fire to his house in North Muirton. The body of James Williamson was discovered by rescue personnel as they attended the blaze in Lewis Place at the weekend. The accused made no plea or declaration and was remanded into custody.

MET office warns for blizzards in Tayside

The MET office have issued warnings of blizzards in the east of Scotland for this evening. Severe weather has already disrupted much of the country today, with reports of problems in the early hours for lorries near Bridge of Earn as they were stuck until gritters and snow ploughs reached them. Parts of the west coast have also been without power, while strong winds and snow caused road closures in highland Perthshire. Roads are now open but care is advised when travelling around Braco and Comrie. It's warned that conditions could continue for the next two days, with areas on the east and central parts of Scotland most likely to be affected.

Trading Standards check Perth businesses for internet complaince

Perth and Kinross Trading Standards service has been carrying out a survey on local internet retailers, to check their businesses comply with current regulations. Nearly 80 websites were checked and only 11 were fully compliant after initial checks, with a further 22 reaching that level after assistance from Trading Standards. The owners of the remaining sites have been contacted and enforcement action is being taken. National results have shown that large retailers do comply with regulations, which include protection from card fraud, a cancellation period and confirmations in writing.

Arrest made after body found in flat blaze

A 26 year old man has been arrested in connection with a death yesterday in a Perth flat. A joint investigation between police and fire officers was immediately launched after a body was discovered amidst a blaze in the flat early on Sunday morning. A post-mortem is expected to be carried out on the victim, believed to be 50 years old, today. The arrested man is also expected to be charged and appear at Perth Sheriff Court sometime today.

New Party launches with new candidate for Perth and North Perthshire

Britain's newest political party is due to launch at Westminister today and will also announce a candidate for Perth and North Perthshire for the coming general election. The Trust Party is being launched by former Conservative Party member Stuart Wheeler, in response to the MPs expense scandal. Douglas Taylor will be running for the Perth seat against candidates from the SNP, Conservative and labour parties that have previously been announced. Mr Taylor was the Conservative Party candidate at the last election, where he was narrowly defeated by current MP Pete Wishart.

Keys handed over for North Inch Campus

The North Inch Community Campus is edging closer to an official opening and this morning welcomed a party from Perth and Kinross Council to tour the facility. The campus will be opened to the public following the Easter Holidays, where residents can access the library and music and sports facilities. The keys were handed over to Coucillor Ian Miller who was delighted to see new building and what it offers the community at large. The school will provide a new home for St Columbas RC High School and St John's RC Primary.

Minister visits Perth volunteer centres

Scotland Office Minister Ann McKechin visited Perth yesterday and met new recruits at the YMCA Perth. Posts at the YMCA have been funded by the Governments Future Jobs Fund initiative, which was extended in the new budget announced earlier this week.
The YMCA have worked closely with local secondary schools supporting pupils who have disengaged from formal education by offering alternative curriculum options.
The Minister also visited the CATH day centre on the Ladeside, to speak with volunteers about the charity's plans for the future and the new shop they recently opened.

MSP welcomes calls for american-style yellow busses

Local MSP Murdo Fraser is backing a campaign to bring American style school busses to the area. The Yellow School Bus Commission visited parliament yesterday and impressed Mr Fraser with what they believe can be offered to schools in Perth and Kinross. Many benefits have been pointed out, notably in cutting cars used in school runs and providing a safe option in ferrying children to and from schools. With school busses already provided in many areas, Mr Fraser is keen to see Local Authorities adopt the new yellow busses.

Police appeal for witnesses after A9 collision

Tayside Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision last night on a notorious stretch of the A9 in Perthshire. Two men were rushed to Ninewells Hospital after the car they were driving collided with a lorry. The men had been travelling South when they hit the HGV from behind at the Stanley junction. The incident took place shortly before 11 o’clock last night.

Local MP labels Chancellor as 'clapped-out'

After launching a fair fuel campaign earlier in the week, MP Pete Wishart has hit out at the increase in fuel tax included in the new budget. Mr Wishart's concerns cover prices at the pumps and in stores, as hauliers will be forced to cover their costs. The 3p increase that will be levied over the coming months has angered the MP who has condemned Mr Darling's decision. He has labelled the Chancellor as 'clapped out' and accused him of using smoke and mirrors to disguise the increase by staggering the rises between now and next year.

Councillor comments on confusion in Chambers

Yesterday's special council meeting has led to the disappointment of many Perth residents, as revocation of original planning consent for the incinerator was defeated. Council Officers had recommended a defence against appeals by waste company Grundon, rather than the possibly costly revocation. Councillor Archie McLellan led the calls to put an end to the saga once and for all with his revocation supporting amendment. He's commented on the sorrow he now feels for the people of Perth. He told Perth FM, "the people of Perth have been ill served by yesterday's decision. I'm sure the people who took it did so in good faith, but there was a great deal of confusion in the Chambers yesterday over exactly what we were voting for. A number of people said that if it had been more clear cut they might have been more inclined to support [revocation]."

Welcome return of missing eagle

Falconers in Auchterarder are celebrating after the return of Pilgrim – their missing bald eagle. The eight year old bird of prey had been driven out of the woods by resident buzzards when strong winds took him farther than he was used to. Pilgrim has been hand reared from birth and concerns mounted for his ability to survive in the wild. Fortunately, a bird watcher spotted him 10 miles away and the relieved team were reunited with the eagle, dubbed a 'big softie'.

Incinerator saga moves forward

A special meeting took place this afternoon in Council Chambers to discuss the options over Grundon's incinerator proposals. Council officers recommended that the best course of action is to defend against an appeal by Grundon, after their proposal was rejected at a development control committee back in November. The decision made was to go with the recommendation in the meeting papers, and Councillors will be given an update in 6 months time. An amendment for revocation by Councillor Archie MacLellan was defeated by 27 to 8.

Bar staff take part in first aid training

Perth bar staff were today taking part in emergency first aid training courses.
The training scheme has been developed as part of the Best Bar None awards and a total of 40 bar staff took part this morning. The event follows a pilot course that was run last year, which proved beneficial. Best Bar None Awards focus on public safety and customer care and encourage issues such as prevention of crime and public nuisance.

A9 letter garners response from Transport Scotland

Transport Scotland has responded to a letter from MSP Murdo Fraser, asking for dialogue with the residents of Dunkeld and Birnam in regard to road improvements on the A9. David Middleton, Chief Executive of Transport Scotland has stated that the company will liase with Perth and Kinross Council as well as Community Councils. But Mr Fraser still wants to see more effort put in to talk with residents. The Conservative MSP believes the road is in dire need of safety improvements - and dualling.

First Minister opens new campus

First Minister Alex Salmond was in Kinross today for the official opening of the Loch Leven Campus. The campus is part of the Council's multi million pound investment in learning programme and contains state of the art facilities for pupils and the local community as a whole. The First Minister met with pupils before touring the facility and performing an official opening ceremony, unveiling a brass plaque to mark the occasion.

Bald Eagle missing in Perthshire

A Perthshire falconer has issued a plea to those in the area to keep an eye out for a Bald Eagle which went missing near Auchterarder on Monday. The eight year old sea eagle – named Pilgrim – was chased away by resident Buzzards when strong winds carried him further from his usual patch. The Bald Eagle is the national symbol of the United States and was only recently taken off the listing of endangered and threatened species. Pilgrim is a distinctive bird, with a wingspan approaching 5 feet, and a white head and tail.

Perth Tories demand strong approach on incinerator

Perthshire conservatives have banded together, demanding that Councilors adopt a strong approach when dealing with the incinerator proposals at the Council's Special Meeting on Wednesday. The Shore Road saga as the Tories have dubbed it has concerned politicians of all parties. Perth and Kinross officers are recommending to Councillors not to go for revocation, but to defeat Grundon's appeal against refusal of the application. Revocation is seen as a last resort as it could leave the council facing a hefty compensation bill. The Conservatives feel the Council may have blundered during the process, and now demand a definitive end and do everything in their power to see off the incinerator.

Councillors still urged to rid city of incinerator plans

Perth and Kinross Councillors are still being publicly urged to rid the city of the proposed incinerator. Local MP Pete Wishart has been vocal in his campaign against the plans, and has urged developer Grundon to accept the views of Perth residents and to come to Perth to settle the issue. An upcoming full council meeting will decide how to proceed and revocation has been recommended, which could leave the Council with a hefty compensation bill. Mr Wishart has said Grundon have refused his invitations to come to Perth so far, and believes the company does not understand how unwanted the incinerator is.

City Hall survey response is positive


Thousands of surveys were returned to Perth and Kinross Council over the consultation period on the future of Perth City Hall. The process concluded last week, after a campaign where locals were asked which of 5 options they would prefer for the building, which has lain empty since 2005. The Council have spoken of the vital nature of the responses by residents, with the surveys being analysed with a view to being aired at a special council meeting in May.

Local Businesses encouraged to recycle and reduce waste

Perth and Kinross Council is encouraging local businesses to find out how they can reduce the cost of waste disposal. The Council are offering support to help avoid escalating landfill tax charged as disposal costs are set to continue to rise in the years ahead. Recycling and reducing waste has been recommended to help keep costs as low as possible. In hopes to encourage companies to recycle, the Council has not increased their recycling charges, to keep them below those of general waste collections.

Roof blown off Tay Street flat

A Perth family had their sleep rudely disturbed last night, after part of their roof was blown off by high winds. The family were forced out of their top floor flat on Tay Street around midnight, when winds caused serious damage to the roof over the gable end of the building. The family is now staying with relatives. Police were forced to close off Tay Street, between Marshall Place and Canal Street but this has now been reopened.


Perth Racecourse gears up for Sport Relief

All eyes may be on the Cheltenham festival today but on Sunday, attention switches to Perth Racecourse for a Sport Relief bonanza. The course hosts a run for the charity, with people encouraged to turn up in fancy dress or Saint Johnstone kits, to accompany their official Sport Relief socks. Children and adults can take part in the event and prizes will also be awarded for the best fancy dress.


Saints in good spirits for Celtic trip

Saint Johnstone head to Celtic Park tomorrow full of confidence after two straight wins strengthened claims on a top six finish. They now sit just three points behind sixth placed Hearts, with two games in hand but will have to take something from an improving Celtic side to keep the pressure on the teams above. Robbie Keane has been the star of the show for Celtic in recent weeks and the Saints defence will have to be at their best to keep the Irishman quiet.

Community team to build on success

The North Perth Community School Team are working hard to build on a recent Gold at the 2010 COSLA awards. When they won the Community and Citizen Well-being category, they became the first ever group from Perth to win a Gold Award at the event. Now they are looking to use the success as a springboard to attract further funding and develop projects such as "Men and Children Matter", which aims to strengthen the role of the father in a child's life.

Attacker escapes prison

A Perth woman has today escaped prison after pleading guilty to the assault and robbery of a 72 year old man. Heroin addict Tracey Shields, visited the pensioner's home with fellow drug addict Sara Townley, hoping they could borrow money from him. However, the pair were asked to leave and Townley pushed him to the floor before Shields raided his trouser pockets and removed a wallet. Townley was jailed for a year when sentenced earlier in the month but Shields has escaped imprisonment and was instead handed an eight-month restriction of liberty order.

New care home rejected

Councillors have rejected plans for a new care home in rural Perthshire, amid concerns over the suitability of the proposed location. Plans to use a remote cottage in Logiealmond lost out by a single vote, after a debate by the development control committee. The home, which was to be used for children with behavioural and emotional issues, would have bordered a local farm and therefore posed a number of safety risks. Councillor Willie Wilson had urged other councillors to defer the decision until further information was received but this was turned down and the application has now been refused.

Police investigate explicit video claims

Police have launched a probe after it was reported that mobile phone footage, allegedly showing two underage pupils engaged in sexual intercourse, was being circulated around Perth schools. Horrified staff at Perth Grammar School called in officers on Monday after making the discovery. Police also returned to the school yesterday but have yet to find the alleged footage. Perth and Kinross Council have so far declined to comment on the story, as it is the subject of a police investigation.

NHS Tayside to expand buddy scheme

Following the successful implementation of a buddies scheme for kidney patients, NHS Tayside are now hoping to use the system to help deal with other long-term illnesses. The renal buddies scheme has proved extremely useful for patients at Perth Royal Infirmary, with volunteers able to give out plenty of support and practical advice. Now NHS Tayside look set to use a similar system to help deal with illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

Parklands Hotel lands environmental award

One of Perth's top hotels has been recognised for it's environmental work. The Parklands, has been awarded the Green Tourism Business Scheme's Silver Award and could be in prime position to pick up a Gold Award at the next audit. Staff were praised for their attitude to environmental management and the hotel has won plaudits for its use of local produce and bid to cut energy consumption. With developments ongoing, the auditor also expressed optimism that the Parklands could build on their good work and pick up the Gold Award on their next visit.

Renal buddies scheme proving a success at Perth Royal Infirmary

NHS Tayside is on the lookout for new volunteers for their successful renal buddies scheme. The service, which began last year, helps provides invaluable support and advice to kidney patients on a one to one basis. All volunteers have experience of either dialysis or a kidney transplant themselves and are able to share their own experiences with patients across the region, including those at Perth Royal Infirmary. Pupils rebel over unisex toilet plan

Pupils at Perth High School have threatened to go on strike if plans to introduce unisex toilets are pushed through. The school is set to spend thousands on upgrading it's outdated facilities but some pupils have expressed concern and anger at the proposed design. The shared system has been installed in a number of recently built schools across the region and has attracted more than its fair share of controversy. However, Perth Council has come out in support of the plans, pointing out that other toilet facilities will be available elsewhere within the school.

Grundon refuse to give up on incinerator proposal

Grundon waste management have refused to give up on their plans to build an incinerator at Shore Road, Perth. The proposal, which includes an 80-metre chimney stack, had looked to be dead in the water, after the council announced that they were confident of stopping the development, without paying excessive compensation. However, a spokesperson for Grundon has announced that this news will not affect their standpoint and they will pursue their appeal against an earlier rejection by the Development Control Committee (DCC).

City Hall decision moves step closer

The future of Perth's City Hall should be decided by May, according to Council leader, Councillor Ian Miller. A four-week public consultation process came to an end today, with local residents and businesses asked on their views regarding the future of the hall. In total around 4,000 questionnaires were distributed with another 700 people completing an online survey on the Council's website. A special meeting of the Council is due to take place in May and Councillor Miller is hopeful that it will conclude the process.

Incinerator plan set to be scrapped

Unpopular plans to build a new incinerator at Shore Road, Perth, look set to be scrapped, after a report revealed that the Council would not have to pay sizeable compensation to stop the proposal. It had been feared that waste management company Grundon would be able to claim compensation from the Council, should the incinerator be prevented from going ahead. But according to legal advice the Council can prevent any development it views as detrimental, without incurring additional costs.


Local schools unite for good cause

Senior pupils at Perth's four secondary schools have united to raise money for a local children's hospice. Rachel House Hospice in Kinross is set to benefit after the Head Boy's and Girl's at the schools formed a new fundraising committee called the Perth Inter-schools Fundraising Team (PFT). The aim is to raise £5,000 by putting on a series of activities at the schools including a raffle and/or auction called "Bash for Cash" on the 1st of April. River Braan renewable energy proposal rejected

A proposal to create a renewable energy scheme at the River Braan gorge has been put on hold after Scottish ministers rejected the plans. The Scottish Government have decided to uphold the decision of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to refuse a license, over concerns about how the scheme would impact upon the lower part of the Braan.


New treatment benefits stroke patients at Perth Royal Infirmary

An innovative new physiotherapy treatment is being put to good use at Perth Royal Infirmary's dedicated stroke unit. Stroke patients often have difficulties grasping and releasing objects but with new upper limb splints they can practice the actions, which gives them far greater control over their treatment and recovery. The purchase of the splints has been made possible thanks to money donated to NHS Tayside's Endowment Fund.


Saints set for biggest match of the season

Saint Johnstone travel to Falkirk this Saturday with manager Derek McInnes labelling the match as the biggest of his tenure. Despite last week's 2-1 defeat to Motherwell, a top six finish remains within the grasps of the Saints and victory would see them move above Aberdeen into seventh place. However, McInnes isn't getting carried away and says that his team will be doing all they can to earn the win.

1.6 million pound resurfacing on A9

Transport Scotland is spending £1.6 million on resurfacing the A9 between Aberuthven and Auchertarder this week. The works will use a “crack and seat” technique that makes better use of existing road layers which will minimise the need for new material to be quarried produced and transported to the site. The works are also part of a carbon management pilot to measure the materials, energy and waste generated by road projects. The work which starts next week will be carried out in two phases with a break to avoid the busy Easter weekend and should be finished mid April.


World Kidney Day

Today celebrates World Kidney day with information stalls at hospitals in Dundee, Perth & Kinross and Angus. World Kidney Day sees events being held around the globe in over 100 countries to raise awareness of kidney diseases, which affect around 600 million, which is around one in 10 people. Renal dialysis or transplantation is the only treatment, but three people die in the UK every day waiting for an organ transplant, resulting in over a 1,000 deaths a year.Today more than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their life. Football fans face ban if caught in bother on Scotlands rail network.

Fans of Tayside's three football clubs now risk losing their season tickets if they are involved in trouble anywhere on Scotland's rail network. Dundee, St Johnstone and Dundee United supporters detained or arrested by British Transport Police (BTP) also face football banning orders. The BTP has agreed to share information with the three clubs in a bid to tackle disorder and anti-social behaviour. Football banning orders prevent fans from attending matches in Scotland, the UK or abroad for up to 10years. The scheme is already in place with many other Scottish football clubs

The four-week consultation, during which Perth & Kinross Council has been seeking a wide range of views on potential uses for the building, ends next Monday. Five options for the future of the building are being explored through the consultation, to help the Council these include to re-use City Hall for another purpose, to completely demolish City Hall to create a large new public space or to do nothing and leave the city hall as it is. Engineering firm charged for pollution

A civil engineering firm was fined £3000 at Perth sheriff court yesterday after it admitted releasing a toxic chemical pollutant into the River Tay. At least 120 litres pesticide calcium polysulphide was released into waterwaysaround Perth after a spillage from Battlebay Farm around 6km north of the town where I and H Brown were working. The chemical killed invertebrate wildlife and threatened fish stocks while there were also concerns it would impact on Perths water supply.I and H Brown escaped a heavy fine after Sheriff Michael Flethcher accepted the spillage had been made by mistake by an experienced company with no previous convictions and a history of working safely with dangerous substances.

Kinross textile company reports rise in pension liabilities

A Kinross-based textile company Dawson International has reported its pension liabilities have almost trebled in the past year to £19.3m. In a statement, Dawson said that the increase in liabilities was due to lower corporate bond yields and increased estimates of life expectancy. The group said the escalation of the pension deficit, from £6.7m to £19.3m, represented a significant challenge for its UK businesses and was likely to prevent it from making any new acquisitions. The company said it was in talks with pension trustees and the regulator to agree a way forward.

Scheme on A9 began yesterday

A £3million scheme to make the A9 safer at Auchertarder began yesterday. As well as improving safety and access to the dual carriageway for motorists joining the raod from the town at the Loaninghead junction, the scheme will also bring employment and open up housing opportunities.The project will also serve the proposed new housing development and the anticipated increase of traffic it will bring.The Loaninghead scheme will allow provision for the building of up to 500 houses

Mobile pitch launched at McDiarmid Park in new partnership

A new sporting team up involving St Johnstone football club and Perth and Kinross community safety partnership was launched at McDiarmid park yesterday.Funded by the council and under the banner of Street Sports for all it will see the St Johnstone coaches take a mobile sports pitch to different locations throughout Perth and Kinross. It will be targeted at areas where there are concerns about young people becoming involved in offending or anti social behaviour.It has been tried out in communities in Perth and Kinross and it has been found to play a diversionary role in reducing offending and alcohol consumption by young people.

MP commends Perth's Independant Advocacy work

Local MP, Pete Wishart, visited Perth's Independent Advocacy network today. Independent Advocacy works together with volunteers to create a stronger community where people are valued and enables them to have their voices heard. The organisation helps people who are experiencing mental health problems or have dementia, learning and physical disabilities, frailty or age related problems as well as their Carers who find it difficult to have their say.Mr Wishart congragulated the Independent advocacy at all its hard work in helping and continue to help people in the community.


Perth and Kinross Licensing Board consultation on 'pavement cafes'

Perth and Kinross Licensing Board is carrying out a consultation on its policy which covers the serving of alcohol in pavement cafes.The Licensing Board's current policy allows licensed premises wishing to operate a 'pavement café' in public areas to serve alcohol only alongside a table meal, or a light meal such as a baguette or panini.The Board will review its policy discuss an number of different options including alcohol could be sold and consumed in the outdoor pavement area on its own without having to be provided with food, alcohol could be served within certain times for example between 12 and 8pm or there could be no change. The consultation is taking place between 4 March and 31 March 2010.

Miss Perthshire 2010

Today the Miss Perthshire competition for girls aged 17-24 was launched.
All girls living in Perthshire and Kinross–shire are invited to enter what is an amazing opportunity to represent Perthshire and includes opportunities over the year to be an ambassador for the area.The event will raise money for Bravehearts Children’s Trust a charity based in Almondbank aiming to benefit children who are terminally ill or chronically sick. Lib Dem Leader Nick Cleff in conference in Perth

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg will open his party's Scottish conference in Perth today with a pledge to clean up politics.He will also spotlight key manifesto themes for the forthcoming election campaign, saying his party stands for fairness and a good start for children. Mr Clegg has delayed his speech to avoid clashing with Gordon Brown's appearance at the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war. In Scotland, the party is positioning itself as direct challengers to Labour in the forthcoming UK election in seats across Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, where the Liberal Democrats are already represented in the Scottish Parliament. Mr Clegg will tell delegates that Labour has failed to deliver for Scotland.


McKinnon and Clarke hit out at Scottish Southern Energy

An energy consultancy has hit out at Scottish and Southern Energy’s decision yesterday to cut gas bills by 4 per cent from the end of March. McKinnon and Clarke, which is one of the largest purchasers of energy in the UK, believes that 10 per cent on both gas and electricity would be a fair cut based on significant drops in the wholesale market over the last twelve months. David Hunter, energy analyst from McKinnon & Clarke said the move is welcomed but more cuts need to be made not just with Scottish and southern energy but other suppliers too.

Parents shock as five year old walks home alone from school

Parents have reacted with shock after it was revealed s five year old pupil at a new multi million pound Perth school walked almost a mile home without supervision. Staff should have escorted the child to an after school club in the Inch View complex but he slipped from the premises unnoticed. When the boy arrived home in central Perth it is understood he had to be looked after by a neighbour until his mother returned home from work.Perth and Kinross council chiefs have issued a 'full and frank' apology to the boys mother following the incident on Monday.

Gang of women rob elderly men

A gang of women targeted vulnerable frail and elderly men before attacking and robbing them, a court has heard. Twenty nine-year-old Tracey Shields and twenty three year old Sara Townley are the latest of the gang to be caught in a yearlong police operation. The operation was set up to capture the group after several men were robbed of hundreds of pounds in scams by the all-female gang. Shields and Townley, both from Perth, admitted carrying out a violent robbery on a 72-year-old man, for less than £10. Shields had her sentence deferred for a restriction of liberty order report. Townley was jailed for a year

Perthshire primary school upgrade
A Perthshire primary school will be upgraded it was agreed this morning. Councillor Liz Grant convenor of life long learning committee for Perth and Kinross council said the project was long overdue for an upgrade of accommodation at Invergowrie Primary School. Nine new classrooms are to be built and also new land for external play.

Perthshire pharmacist named best in the country

A Perthshire pharmacist has been named the best in the country. Graeme Carcary from Davidsons Chemists in Blairgowre was named pharmacist of the year at the first annual Scottish Pharmacist Awards ceremony in Edinburgh. Mr Carcary, who runs two weekly prescribing clinics was recognised for his dedication to caring for the community. Running a respiratory clinic and a long-term pain clinic he was described by judges as a truly exemplary health care professional.

Gordon Brown backs rival to Perth in City status competition

Prime Minister Gordon Brown came under attack from local politicians yesterday after apparently backing a rival to Perth's city status campaign. Mr Brown made comments to potentially approve a bid for Reading in Berkshire. Civic leaders used the Perth 800 celebrations to launch the bid for the 2012 Queens Diamond Jubilee competition but such a high profile backing from the Prime Minister for another potential rival will be particularly unwelcome.The Prime Minister has been urged to visit Perth to view the strength of the campaign.

Work on new dental centre making progress

Work is progressing on a new 6 million pound dental treatment and teaching centre in Perth. The centre at Broxden will massively ease pressure on dental services for Perth and Kinross providing 20 new chairs in 15 surgeries and supporting an additional 10 000 registrations by its third year of operation. Funding has come from local bodies such as the Scottish Government as the current community dental services and post graduate training are only available in cramped accommodation at Drumhar medial practice in Perth city centre.The new hospital will also provide a state of the art training environment for all levels of dental professionals.

Summit held to discuss how to help local businesses.

Local authority officials met with a number of Perth and Kinross business leaders to discuss how best to deal with downturn. A number of potential schemes were debated along with a progress report on projects implemented following a similar summit last year. Business grants and addtional funding of around 160 000 poundshave been provided as well as support to 44 companies by way of start up grants, growth and premises grants.Twenty senior business leaders took part as well as the council infrastucture convener John Kellas.

Perth and Kinross Council Summit meeting

Perth & Kinross Council today held a second Economic Summit meeting with the area’s business leaders to discuss how the local economy can be helped through the current recession. Enterprise and Infrastructure Convener Councillor John Kellas and other councillors met with senior business leaders to discuss how schemes and projects were progressing.The possibility of setting up a local retail academy to help train local people for available jobs was discussed, after retailers said they were having trouble recruiting at the moment.

Perthshire bus firm found guilty

A Perthshire bus firm that was ordered to come off the road has been found guilty of blatant and premeditated attempts to interfere with services ran by rivals stagecoach.Bankfoot buses Ltd of Perth recently appealed after deputy traffic commissioner Tom McCartney enforced a £1650 fine and an indefinite disqualification. The appeal was rejected as the firm was found guilty of a number of breaches including the use of a forged operator license disc. The company also lied to both the tribunal and Mr McCartney during a public enquiry last year.

Nursery display vandalized.

A nursery in Perth which displays flowers, shrubs and bedding plants has been targeted by vandals.They caused more than 15 000 pounds worth of damage at the display at the council run facility at Westbank Nursery on Jeanfield Rd. Polytunnels were slashed and heating systems turned off in a bid to cause maximum damage.
It was also a favourite spot for school visits giving youngsters a rare insight into the science behind the production of Perths famous floral displays. Anyone who has any information on the incident is encouraged to contact Tayside police.

Housing plan given go ahead

A controversial housing plan has been given the go ahead without the element of affordable housing.The Scottish government has given the permission for the Lomond Hotel in Glenfarg to be demolished and 14 flats built in its place. It has lain untouched for four years and was previously rejected as local backers claimed they could not afford to sell any of the flats as low cost housing.Most recently in August the plans were re submitted with the condition the affordable housing contribution be surrendered.


Enchanted Forrest handed over

The Enchanted Forrest, Scotlands largest outdoor and light show is to be officially handed over today to the Pitlochry Area Community Interest company.The group are a social enterprise company based in Pitlochry and cover much of highland Perthshire.
MSP Roseanna Cunningham will officially hand over the event on behalf of the current steering group at Forestry Commission Scotland’s Faskally Wood which is home to the event.


Police investigate tampered cash machine

Police are investigating the possibility of a tampered cash machine in Perth.The officers fear the cash machine at Asda on Dunkeld Road could have an unauthorised card reading device fitted.The machine was taken out of service and those who have used the macine recently are advised to check their bank accounts for any discrepancies or unexplained transactions.The same ATM was targeted last year.
