Another Castle Huntley prisoner escapes

The Justice secretary is refusing to quit after another Castle Huntley prisoner has escaped. Kenny Macaskill was responding to calls for his resignation after another inmate failed to return to the open prison near Dundee. Detectives in Perth are still searching for John Brown, who was given a life sentence for murder in 1976. Politicians say they've been kept in the dark about the recent escape. But Mr Macaskill says it's a matter for the police.

Appeal after cars vandalised in broad daylight

Vandals scratched sixteen cars on a quiet perth street. Local residents were left in shock after finding the cars had been vandalisedalong Abbot street and young street in Craigie. It's believed the incident happened on Wednesday morning between 8 and 10o' clock. The suspects were seen in the Raeburn park at around half past nine. They're between 15 and 16 and are of a slim build with short brown hair.

Increased concern for missing German woman

It's been a week since a German woman went missing from Perthshire. Sonja Von Monkiewitsch had been volunteering at Culdees Farm at Fearnan before she disappeared. The 31 year old is known to dislike cities and busy places. She left behind medication. Police think she may be sleeping rough in Perthshire. She's described as 5 foot 8 and stocky with long brown hair and a piercing on the right side of her nose.

Calls for peace over charity cycle race row

Highland Perthshire Councillors are calling for peace over the Etape Caledonia row. It comes after cyclists in the controversial event were accused of sending abusive messages to protestors. The closed road event was halted earlier this month when carpet tacks were strewn along the route. Now cyclists and protesters have been feuding over message boards online. Some of those against the charity cycle have had their details posted on public forums.

Fair City CCTV to be upgraded

Perth's CCTV footage is to be replaced with modern digital equipment. Plans for a new camera system are being unveiled today. The current cameras use old-fashioned analogue tapes to record footage. All 35 will be replaced with an up-to-date system. The new scheme will cost the council one hundred and 25 thousand pounds. Councillor Willie Robertson says the cameras are there to make people feel safe.

Better library facilities for Perthshire

The six new community campuses being built in Perth will provide better library facilities for the public. Community libraries are to be provided at four of the sites. The North Inch community campus in Perth will see a brand new library built in the centre of Perth. They'll also have longer opening hours. The lifelong learning committee will hear today how the new services will provide more opportunities for public learning.

Perthshire business goes up in blaze

A landmark Perthshire business has been gutted by a blaze. The owners of the Perthshire Caravan Company could only watch as smoke engulfed the Errol premises last night. Fire-fighters from Perth and Dundee attempted to save the building shortly after half past seven. The workshop and reception areas have been badly damaged. An investigation is to be carried out today.

Perthshire teenagers in need of fostering

Perthshire children are in desperate need of Foster homes. That's according to The Perth and Kinross foster service. It comes after fostering fortnight showed there's a shortage of around one thousand seven hundred carers in Scotland. Fostering manager Andy Turnbull told Perth FM homes are needed for older children.

Search for missing German woman

Police are still searching for a German woman who disappeared from her Perthshire workplace yesterday. Sonja von monkievitch was working voluntarily at a farm near Aberfeldy. The 31 year old left medication behind. It's believed she dislikes cities and busy places. Police believe she could be sleeping rough or in a bed and breakfast. She's described as five foot eight, with long reddish brown hair of a stocky build and a pierced nose.

Perth City Hall plans submitted to council

A decision wont be made on Perth City Hall by the end of this month. That's the message from Perth and Kinross council. They received revised plans from Wharfeside developers today, which include a partnership with Artspace to turn the hall into a retail and lifestyle centre. It was previously reported that a decision would be made over the proposals by the 31st of May. But the council say it'll take them longer to look through the new plans.

Plans to 'split Perth in two' condemned by politicians

Plans from the Boundary commission to split Perth in two have been condemned by politicians. The MSP for the Perth constituency, Roseanna Cunningham, says the plans ignore the wishes of the local community. They plan to include Perth City centre in the North Perthshire constituency, meaning there'll be two MSP's. A copy of the proposals can be viewed at most public libraries.

Top Perth policeman retires

Police in Perth are meeting today to bid farewell to their divisional commander. Chief superintendent Matt Hamilton is retiring after 30 years of service with the police. He joined Tayside police in 1979 after working as an engineer. He's held posts as a national drug co-coordinator and regularly policed T in the Park.
Tayside police say he’s highly regarded and will be missed.

The MP for Perth and North Perthshire has published his London Living expenses online for the public to see. It comes after scandalous revelations over Westminster allowance claims. Mr Wishart also be holding a meeting next Thursday to discuss MP's expenses with the public. The SNP politician says he has nothing to hide. His expenses are available online at petewishartmp.com

Etape Caledonia still proving to be popular

Registrations for next years Etape Caledonia are selling at six times faster than last year. That's despite controversy at this years cycle event. Since Monday five hundred participants have signed up to take part in the Highland Perthshire race next year. Yesterday a local community council chairman was charged with attempted sabotage after placing tacks along the route last Sunday.

Funeral car joy rider jailed

A teenager who stole a funeral car and led police on a high-speed chase before crashing has been jailed for six months. 17-year-old Sammy Townsley took the black limousine from an undertakers in April. The Moray teenager drove through Perth and Scone at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour before crashing into a barrier. The car was a write off and Townsley and his passenger were treated for injuries.

Pitlochry man charged with Etape Caledonia sabotage

A community council chairman has appeared in court in connection with the disruption of a major cycling event in Perthshire. 62-year-old Alex Grosset has been charged with culpably and recklessly depositing carpet tacks onto the road. Hundreds of cyclists suffered punctures during the Etape Caledonia on Sunday. The Pitlochry man made no plea and has been released on bail.

Police to frisk pub goers in Perth this summer

Police have warned that people may be frisked as they enter Perth pubs this summer. They're hoping by searching people out on the town, they'll reduce the number of violent incidents in city centre bars and clubs. They'll be looking to confiscate drugs and weapons. Detective Inspector Ian Martin says it’s to keep places safer over the busy summer months.

Taxi license regulations to be reviewed

Councillors have agreed to review taxi-licensing regulations in Perth and Kinross. It comes after a report was given to them this morning, showing licenses are being sold for more than fifty thousand pounds. Taxi drivers in Perth claim the figures are sometimes higher, and rent can be as much as one hundred and fifty pounds a week. Currently, there are only one hundred and ten licences in Perth. The council will consider increasing that number to reduce the problem.

Perth businesses told to ride throught the recession

The Scottish Government is calling on Perth businesses to make a full economic recovery at a conference today. Finance secretary John Swinney is speaking at The Perthshire Chamber of Commerce spring conference at Perth Concert Hall. He’ll be joined by a number of influential speakers, including comedian Hardeep Singh. They’ll also be holding an exhibition for businesses to showcase their work.

Perth man in seven hour beating ordeal

Residents of a Perth flat told Police they heard tortured cries when a former boxer subjected his partner to a seven-hour beating. Perth Sheriff Court heard yesterday how John Kerr punched Priscilla Taylor, dragged her by her hair and stamped on her head during the ordeal in January. The 25 year old pled guilty to the attack, assaulting a police officer and possession of cocaine. He’ll be sentenced next month.

Perthshire visitor attractions welcome regulation lift

Local visitor attractions have welcomed the Scottish governments decision to lift alcohol display regulations on tourist attractions. It comes after Justice secretary Kenny Macaskill made the announcement at a Perthshire distillery yesterday. He met with Kenny Mackay from the Scottish Liqueur centre.

Etape Caledonia sabotaged by carpet tacks

Investigations are continuing after a Highland Perthshire cycle even was sabotaged yesterday. Its thought Protesters scattered the carpet tacks along the route of the Etape Caledonia in protest of road closures. The 81-mile event attracted three thousand five hundred cyclists who raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care. North Tayside MSP John Swinney says he's disgusted by the attack.

Justice minister unveils new alcohol display regulations in Perthshire

Scottish Justice minister Kenny Macaskill says new regulations over the display of alcohol will help the tourism industry. He was speaking at the Scottish liqueur centre in Bankfoot. The Scottish government have amended regulations in parliament today. It means that visitor attractions selling whisky will not be affected by new rules to hide alcohol.

Local MP exempt from expenses clean up committee

A local MP says that Gordon Brown is pulling strings to exclude him from a Westminster committee. It comes after Pete Wishart was rejected from the expenses clean up committee. A senior Labour whip refused his nomination after a place needed filled. He said a Democratic Ulster Unionist MP should be chosen.

Perth family seek answers from army report

The parents of a young Perth soldier who died at Deep Cut barracks say they're impressed the army for owning up to failures. It comes after the army released a report into the findings of the deaths of two young soldiers. Private James Collinson was found with gunshot wounds in his head over seven years ago. Armed forces Minister Bob Ainsworth is giving a written statement in the House of Commons later.

Conservative Conference comes to Perth

Perth's economy will be boosted by six figure sum after the Scottish conservative conference in the fair city this week. Around one thousand five hundred delegates will be in Perth Concert hall over today and tomorrow. Tory leader David Cameron will address the conference tomorrow. Scottish leader Annabel Goldie's expected to call for a minimum jail term for knife carriers today. Conservative candidate for Perth, Peter Lyburn says the conference is great for the local economy.

Perth man in high-speed police chase walks free

A Perth man who led a police chase with a teenage girl in his car has walked free from court. Scott Newlands was sentenced to 240 hours of community service at Perth sheriff court today. The twenty year old was travelling over one hundred and fourty miles per hour when his car flipped onto the roof. He was spared jail as he looks after his younger brother. He’s been banned from driving for three years.

Assault on North Inch

An assault took place on the North Inch last night. Police are looking for people who saw the incident. It happened at around eleven o'clock last night near Hay street. No one was injured, but the victim was left shaken. If anyone was in the area at the time or have any information, they're asked to contact the police.

St Johnstone fans turn out for bus tour

Thousands of St Johnstone fans lined the streets of Perth last night to see the team on an open top bus. The parade was laid on to honour the players after they won the first division title and promotion to the Scottish Premier League. After touring through Letham, Muirton and Craigie, the bus head to town to be greeted by thousands of fans on the High street.

Perthshire man jailed after going on the run

A Perthshire man who went on the run following early release from prison has been jailed for 32 months. Joseph Millbank became the first Scot on a child protection Most Wanted website when he failed to notify police of his change of address last May. The Luncarty man's been ordered to resume a prison sentence of ten years for abusing children. But the sentence will still be ten years, meaning no extra time's been added to the term.

Maternity Unit at PRI is officially opened

Perth Royal Infirmary's new Midwife Unit and Women's Clinic has been officially opened. Public health minister Shona Robison spoke at the ceremony this morning. The community maternity unit moved premises in January. The 4.8 million pound refurbished unit includes birthing pools and en suite maternity rooms. Mrs Robison told Perth FM she's impressed by the new facility.

Perth Railway station in desperate need of attention

A local politician says it's time to come up with a vision for Perth Railway station. Murdo Fraser says constituents always complain about the unwelcoming atmosphere and lack of facilities. Three hundred and fifty thousand pounds has been spent on The Victorian station since 2007. But Mr Fraser says more needs to be done to improve it. He's been campaigning for changes since 2004.

Victory parade for St Johnstone

St Johnstone fans will get a chance to celebrate their teams success tonight. The team will be taking to the streets of Perth in an open top bus victory parade. Starting from Mcdiarmid at 7 o'clock, it'll visit places including Letham, Hillyland and Tulloch. Saints finished their league winning season with a four nil win against Airdrie last night.

Jet skiing pair rescued from River Tay

Two people were rescued from the River Tay yesterday following a Jet Ski accident. The 29-year-old woman and 35-year-old man were rescued after being plunged into the water. A lifeboat and helicopter were launched to help the rescue operation. Eventually a member of the Perth diving club rescued the woman, and the man was pulled out at Perth harbour by emergency services.

Community wardens have positive impact

Community wardens have a positive impact on resident's lives. That's according to a report that'll go before councillors this week. It shows how wardens in Rattray, Muirton and North Muirton have formed good relationships with locals. It also shows how incidents of youth annoyance have dropped off in these areas.

Perthshire pupils compete in European quiz

A group of Perthshire school pupils will be in Parliament today, competing in the finals of a European quiz. Comrie Primary School won the Perth and Kinross heat of the Euroquiz in March. They'll compete against 30 other schools today. It's the second year the quiz has been held in the main chamber of the Scottish parliament.

Black Watch soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Black Watch soldier has been killed in Afghanistan. The soldier was shot whilst on patrol in the Helmand Province yesterday. It's the first casualty since the battalion was dispatched last month. Details of the soldier's identity will not be released until the funeral.

City Hall announcements are 'premature'

Perth and Kinross council say announcements over Perth City Hall are premature. It comes after developers Wharfeside announced plans for a retail and lifestyle centre with Artspace yesterday. They've revised the proposals originally submitted in 2006.
They now include spaces for art galleries and entertainment. A council spokesperson said the plans are exciting, but have not yet been approved and are not final.

Bus company investigates complaint

The Stagecoach bus company is investigating a complaint of anti-social behaviour on a Perth bus route. A mother complained of drunken football fans on the number two bus from Letham. She said they verbally abused her seven-year-old daughter and swore loudly on the bus. The Morton fans were not asked to leave the bus by the driver. The company say they'll be looking into the incident.

Woman in Perthshire crash dies

The woman who died in a Perthshire road collision has been named as Joan Johnstone. The 57-year-old woman was the passenger in her husbands Volvo when it collided with a mini bus in the Bridge of Cally area. They're from Scarborough in England. Her 59 year old husband is being treated for chest injuries, but it's not thought to be life threatening. Three other men were also hospitalised following the crash.

City Hall developers to make an announcement

Wharfeside Regeneration say they hope to make a proper announcement over the Perth City Hall redevelopment at the end of this month. They've been behind the transformation of the city centre building since 2006. They say plans to turn it into a retail centre have been halted due to the recession. If the council approves the revised plans, the hall could be opening early next year.

'Support our shops' campaign gets local backing

Retailers in Perth have welcomed the support our shops campaign. It's designed to raise awareness of the difficulties smaller shops face during the recession. Launched by Peter Lyburn, it's received the backing of prominent business figures in Perth. Mike Beale, the chamber of commerce president has pledged his support to the campaign. It focuses around getting people to shop in smaller local places to save them from going out of business.

Woman airlifted to hospital after Perthshire crash
A woman has been airlifted to hospital after a collision on a Perthshire road. The two-vehicle crash happened near Bridge of Cally at around midday this afternoon. The woman, who's in her 60's, suffered serious leg and chest injuries when the Gold Volvo she was a passenger in crashed with a blue Fort Transit minibus. The driver of the Volvo also suffered serious chest injuries and is being treated at Ninewells hospital. The minibus driver was not injured but three of his passengers are being treated in hospital. The A893 Perth to Braemar road is closed whilst investigations are underway.

Drink driver jailed after crash
A drunk woman who crashed her car with a baby and toddler in the back seat has been jailed. Norma Fraser from Fife was sentenced at Perth Sheriff court today. She was more than three times the drink drive limit when she crashed her car into a stationary Landrover full of people between Fife and Kinross. She was previously given a four year ban for another drunken crash, but was handed back her licence. The 37 year old's been jailed for five months and given an eight-year driving ban.

Pensioner in critical condition after being struck by car
A local pensioner is in a critical condition after being struck by a car. The 65-year-old woman was walking along York Place when a black Volvo car hit her yesterday evening. She's in a serious but stable condition at Ninewells hospital, with a serious head injury. Anyone who witnessed the crash at around 5 o'clock yesterday is asked to contact the police.

St Johnstone celebrating SPL promotion

Perth is still celebrating after St Johnstone made it to the SPL over the bank holiday weekend. After a 3 –1 victory at Mcdiarmid, the blues were presented with the first division trophy. It's the first time the Perth team have made it into the Scottish Premier League in seven years. They also broke their own record for the longest undefeated run.

Perth 800 celebrations a boost to local economy

Perth 800 celebration will be a boost to the local economy. That's according to Perth and Kinross council. The celebrations take place in 2010, on the anniversary of the granting of the royal charter to Perth. The Black Watch are set to play a major role in celebrations.

Figures show Perth people are hard of hearing

Fewer than one in five people in Perth regularly check their hearing. That's according to a study released today. It also showed that people in Perth are more likely to ask someone to repeat themselves than anywhere else in Scotland. Nearly one in three frequently ask others to repeat things, and one in four find it hard to follow conversations in social gatherings.
