Lord awarder highest Scottish Order
Lord Patel of Dunkeld has become the first Scottish Asian to be awarded the Order of the Thistle. The award honours Scottish men and women who have held public office or made a significant contribution to national life. It is the highest honour in Scotland and is second only to the Order of the Garter in the UK. Lord Patel, 71, was born in Tanzania and studied medicine. He was knighted in 1997 and was made a peer two years later. Currently he is the chairman of the UK stem cell oversight committee.
Kinross High School bidder selected
The preferred bidder for the former Kinross High school building has been selected but will not be revealed until matters are clarified. Yesterday's meeting of the Property sub-committee was held in private to select from the bidders for the site. The former High School now lies empty after pupils moved last autumn to the new Loch Leven Community Campus. Negotiations on terms of sale will now take place, but will be conditional on planning consent being given.
